Karen summered in Brigantine during her youth. Later, when she and her husband, Bob, decided to purchase a home at the beach, she came right back to her roots in Brigantine. As a former principal, she was lauded for her communication skills and public relations for her district. She also instilled the importance of character and social emotional skills in her students, in addition to academics and sports. Her love of service learning was instilled in her students at every age level. Karen, her students and Faulty embraced service learning as an important component of the curriculum. After retiring and settling in Brigantine, she became involved in volunteering for several organizations. She joined the Elks and volunteered for many events, eventually joining the Veterans Service Committee which she currently Chairs. She writes many articles about the various activities that she shares with her committee members, caring for the Homeless, addicted and elderly Veterans. Her love of Veterans and service to Veterans grew as she joined the American Legion Auxiliary and became the Chaplain, then the Secretary and now is the Chaplain again. Karen is on the Vestry of her church, but also belongs to the St. Thomas Women’s Club. She loves exercise and just before retiring she was at the Farmers Market when Marisela Zumba Chic was performing Zumba. She watched as the crowd joined in on the lawn and she was hooked. She has been a regular member of Zumba at the Community Center since 2016. She joined the Farmers Market Board and the Green Team and wrote weekly articles for the Times during the summer, then as needed throughout the year for 8 years. Over the years, she circulated at the market with Emmett, his son, Kevin, and more recently with Jordan. Karen chose the topic and vendors to write about, and then these fine photographers would take the pictures for the TIMES. She also has participated in Polar Bear, collecting money every year for Fisher House through the generosity of friends, the Zumba folks and the Farmers Market. Over her years of leadership, she has been asked to write about all of the above activities and organizations to which she belongs. In addition, readers call her and ask her to write articles about children, sports, events, fundraisers, celebrations, the community garden, the Brigantine Community School and more. She continues to weave her tapestry of love of Veterans, the education and service of students, and to document religious, patriotic and fun events in the community. Her love of God is a driving force for her. She believes that the foundation of faith is charity. She has enjoyed writing for the Times and working with Emmett and his staff in the past. Now, with the wonderful McKayla and Garrett, she is happy to continue in her position with the Times. They are a joy to work With!
